The Characters of Attack on Titan

I did say we could talk about anime. And this is one of my favorites, if not my most favorite. And what’s really cool is that every character is likable, even a little bit. Of course that might be kinda biased, but I’m sticking with it. Also, spoilers.

My favorite character is definitely Eren Jäger, and not just because he’s the protagonist. At first, he’s kind of a brat, arguing with his mom and his friends. But this is explained with his strong desire to kill all of the Titans. And that makes sense because Titans eat people. Not to satisfy hunger, but based on instinct. They are simply in it for the kill. No one knows why and since Titans don’t feel like talking, the humans kill them so they can live. This is Eren’s ultimate motivation. He doesn’t want to die and he wants humanity to live without fear behind a wall.

Now just halfway through the first episode or so, it happens: a Titan shows up for the first time in a hundred years and stares down on the people. Then it kicks a hole in the wall like it nothing (I hope that thing broke its toenails). And more Titan flow in and start eating people like pop-tarts, everyone is screaming, rushing to get away, it’s a mess. But not as much as this: a smiling Titan comes up to Eren’s now-demolished house, grabs his mom, and eats her. If Eren didn’t hate Titans before, he does now.

So he goes on to train for three years, knows how to properly use ODM Gear, it’s great. But in episode 5, he gets eaten as well. But it’s fine because by episode 7, we find out that he has the power to change into a Titan himself. This hasn’t been explained in the anime yet, but it has been in the manga (so go read it). After finding this out, the Garrison is understandably curious. So curious in fact, they decide the best option is to point their weapons at him and ask if he’s a human or a Titan. He eventually says he’s human, but Kitz (who planned this, btw) decides to blow him up anyway! But it’s okay because Eren bites his hand and makes himself a half-formed Titan to block the cannonball, saving himself, and his friends (oh yeah, his best friends were there too… I forgot about that).
